![]() Hydroclimate ProjectsAt their 2007 meeting, the GEWEX Scientific Steering Group approved the merger of the GEWEX Hydrometeorology Panel (GHP) and the Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period into the Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observations Project (CEOP). To view a paper with the rationale behind this merger, click here. CEOP, which is co-chaired by Drs.Toshio Koike and Ronald Stewart oversees all GEWEX Hydroclimate projects. This GEWEX Panel coordinates the plans and the focus of scientific issues related to the development and implementation of the Regional Hydroclimate Projects (RHPs) and has oversight over all GEWEX regional hydroclimate and land-surface projects. The principal task of CEOP is to guide these projects in the goal of achieving demonstrable skill in predicting changes in water resources and soil moisture as an integral part of the climate system up to seasonal and annual time scales. Since the merger CEOP has organized a state of the art information system of the RHPs. The merger also accelerated the adoption of standards for observations and interoperability between the observations and the regional science priorities in the regional study areas. If has also helped to identify those parts of the world where more effort is needed to implement principles of data sharing on an urgent basis. CEOP provides a platform for bringing global observations together with the measurements of extreme events which can produce very localized impacts. CEOP web site at the University of Tokyo.
