IN MEMORIAM
Dr. John O. Roads
20 January 1950 -– 21 June 2008
John Roads, Research Professor at the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institute of Oceanography (SIO), co-chair of the GEWEX Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observations Project (CEOP), and former chair of the GEWEX Hydrometeorology Panel, died Saturday, 21 June, following a 2-year battle with leukemia.
In the passing of John we lose a very dear colleague and our community loses an outstanding, knowledgeable, and engaged scientist. John was pivotal to the GEWEX and wider climate community and kept involved until he was physically incapable. We will remember John for his many contributions both scientifically and personally, and we are grateful to have had John in our midst. We will miss him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a trust fund be established in John's name, which will enable SIO graduate students to attend climate science conferences. Donations should be made out to "UC Regents" and should reference the "John Roads Memorial Scholarship fund". They can be sent directly to: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego 9500 Gilman Dr., # 0210 La Jolla, CA 92093-0210.

Sixth International Scientific Conference on the Global Energy and Water Cycle
GEWEX is organizing the Sixth International Scientific Conference on the Global Energy and Water Cycle on 24-28 August 2009 in Melbourne, Australia.
The GEWEX Science Conference is organized parallel to the iLEAPS Science Conference. The theme for both conferences is Water in a Changing Climate: Progress in Land-Atmosphere Interactions and Energy/Water Cycle Research.
The two parallel conferences will have three joint sessions that cover broadly the following themes: 1) Land in the climate system; 2) Aerosol, cloud, precipitation, climate interactions; 3) Future generation of integrated observation and modelling systems.
A Call for Papers will be announced soon. Please see http://gewex.org/2009gewex_ileaps_conf.html or contact Peter van Oevelen for more information.
